There are two partition schemes available for PC, first is GPT (GUID partition table) and the second one is MBR (Master Boot Record). Both have its advantages as well as disadvantages. So, you might need to convert between two.
You may find GPT partition style in many new laptops and personal computers because it is modern and uses UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). MBR partition scheme is older and usually found in old PC’s as most of the old PC’s runs in BIOS mode. Though UEFI is modern but the versions above Windows 7 can boot into both UEFI and BIOS mode.
But, some people find the GPT partition difficult as it has many restrictions. Many people couldn’t get to do the clean install of Windows 10. It may also cause troubles while dual booting the system. So, you may want to convert your disk partition style to good old GPT.
The MBR partition scheme also has lots of disadvantages too. It can’t support more than 4 partitions. The supported size of the disk by MBR partition is only up to 2TB. So, you may want to convert your old MBR disk to new advance GPT partition scheme.
There are two ways by which you can convert GPT disk to MBR or MBR disk to GPT. The first way is to formatting entire drive (cause data loss) and converting it into partition scheme of yours choice. By using the second way you can prevent data loss.
Here I have explained three methods by which you can convert GPT disk to MBR or vice-versa. The first two methods will cause the data to lose. The third method doesn’t cause any data loss but it is too much slower and you may have to pay a couple of bucks (as it includes the use of third-party software).
How to Convert GPT Disk to MBR and Reverse
Before getting any further we would recommend you to take backup of all your important data. The methods below will wipe down all of your data and then convert it into new partition scheme. Although some third partition application will guarantee you the zero loss of data but, it isn’t officially supported by Microsoft. So, copy all your important data to another disk drive.
Method 1: Convert Partition Style Using Disk Management Tool
This method won’t require any special software to work. We will be using Windows inbuilt disk management tool. Here’s how to convert GPT disk to MBR using disk management tool:
- Press Win Key + R, type:
then hit Enter.
- Now, Disk Management Tool will open, select the disk you want to convert. Right-Click on the disk and select→ Delete Volume.
- Now, if you have GPT partition scheme and you want to convert it to MBR then click on the disk and select→ Convert to MBR Disk.
- If you have MBR disk partition then select→ Convert to GPT Disk.
- You have successfully converted the disk to your choice of partition schema. Now, in order to use it, you will have Right Click on the unallocated space and create New Simple Volume.
That is it, you have successfully converted your disk partition scheme.
Method 2: Using cmd to Convert Between Two
This method will require nothing but a command prompt to convert disk partition style. Here’s how to convert disk partition style using cmd:
- Run command prompt in Administrator Mode.
- Now, type:
and hit enter.
- After that, type:
and then hit enter. This will give you the list of disks your device have. Also, you can see whether your disk has GPT partition style or not. If it has GPT partition then you can see ‘*’ in front of that disk in Gpt column.
- Now, type:
select disk #
here replace # with the disk number of which you wish to convert partition style and press enter.
then hit enter. The purpose of this command is to delete all partitions on that disk.
- Now, if you want to convert GPT disk to MBR then type:
then hit enter.
- If you want to convert you MBR disk to GPT then type:
and hit enter.
Now, in order to use it, you have to create a new partition or create a new volume using disk management tool on that disk. Congratulations! you have successfully learned to convert the partition style of the disk. Although the above methods cause entire data loss. This disadvantage can be solved using the third method.
Convert Disk Partition Style Using Third Party Softwares
Method-1 and Method-2 wipe entire data and partitions out of that disk. Although that is a standard method to convert the partition style of the disk, there are lots of software available in the market that claims to convert disk partition style without any data loss.
We tested lots of software to convert disk partition styles and picked some of the best. Our first choice is the EaseUS Partition Master. Although it is a paid software, but it totally provides value for money. You can download the trial version and if you like it then you can buy it. Our second choice is AOMEI Partition Assistant, it is also a paid software but it is totally worth buying. You can download the standard edition of the software for free, but for disk conversion task, you will need to buy pro edition of this software.
This is it! The methods using which you can convert disk partition style. Hope you liked the post. If you have any questions let me know in the comment section down below, we would happy to help.
