Also, Android updating process is bit messy. You might have wait for months to get a newer version of Android on your phone, the only exception to this is two phones- Pixel XL and Pixel.

Design is an important issue while choosing a smartphone. A design of a phone gives it a premium feel and look. Otherwise, what is the point in purchasing a smartphone which feels cheap in hand? There are lots of great designed smartphone available in the market. But do remember, a great design not only comes by its look.

A great design consists of proper components placement like – speaker placement, fingerprint sensor placement, headphone jack placement, and button placements. These components should be placed in a way that would make them easy to reach.

Durability is also another concern in smartphone design. We humans tends to drop our phones very often. Before buying you should make sure that your phone is at least water resistant. A lot of phones today comes with IP68 certification which means they can survive in 1-meter water for 30 minutes.

Another thing you need to make sure is display protection. Make sure you at least buy a phone which has Gorilla Glass protection, which would be able to prevent damage from a few feet drop.

Some of the phones like Moto Z Force comes with a shatterproof display, this can be helpful to people who drops their phone very often.

We have come to an age where smartphone cameras are a most important factor while choosing a smartphone. Many of the smartphones come with a really good camera. As of today, you shouldn’t buy a phone with a resolution less than 12 MP.

But, many people confuse the camera quality with a number of megapixels. Remember, more resolution doesn’t necessarily mean more quality.

While buying a smartphone with a good camera there are lots factors to looks at. Speed – many smartphones with low budget struggles with camera lag, they took too much time to take a picture. Dynamic range – it plays a vital role in a picture quality, today’s smartphone uses HDR mode to bring great dynamic range in photos.

Image stabilization – it has two types – optical and software image stabilization, while both stabilization features are good but, optical image stabilization provides an overall better result. It is really helpful when you’re taking a picture in a low light.

Post processing makes some positive changes in a photo after taking a shot and before showing it to us, it is mainly done by software. Post processing reduces noise, increase dynamic range, do the color correction and lots of other things.

There are many smartphones which come with the great camera. The best examples would be – Pixel XL and iPhone 7 Plus.

Both the cameras take great pictures with some of their unique features like – Pixel’s HDR+ mode which enhances dynamic range in a phone by using some of the best post processing algorithm and iPhone 7 Plus Portrait mode which blurs the background to create a shallow depth of field effect.

Performance

Qualcomm Snapdragon chip

Lots of people make false assumptions when it comes to performance like – if the phone has higher-end specs it performs better, it is almost but not entirely true. A performance of phones depends on lots of things like – hardware it needs run, SoC, RAM size, Storage speed, Optimization.

As we see, iPhones doesn’t have many great specs but it still runs smoothly, how?  The answer is an operating system, iOS doesn’t need high-end specs to run smoothly, the choice of language to build iOS and optimization because of a limited number of devices makes it faster on low-end specs.

In the case of Android, it needs high-end specs to run smoothly, as a result we see lots of high-end specs in Android phones like – octa-core processors, RAM size that might be bigger than your laptop has, and high power batteries.

But, the performance of Android device depends on lots of things as explained further. Display resolution – number of pixels a processor has to push.

Android customization level – A stock Android with very little or no customization at all has lighter UI and better optimization which tends to provide smoother and faster performance. As customization level gets higher, it tends to use more RAM and CPU resources making performance bit slower than stock Android.

RAM also plays important role in performance, as it remembers apps in its memory and loads them whenever needed. Apps are getting heavier every passing day which uses more and more RAM.

So, you shouldn’t buy a smartphone with RAM any less than 3GB. Even if you have a low budget there are great options available like – Moto G5 Plus, which provides 4GB of RAM.

Smartphone RAM

If you don’t have any budget issues and you’re Apple fanboy, iPhone 7 Plus is a great option which runs on A10 Fusion chip which provides some of the fastest and smoothest performance than any of the smartphone available including Android.

On Android phones, Snapdragon 835 is a top player, it is used in some of the phones like Samsung Galaxy S8.

If you have a budget over 400 or 500$ then you shouldn’t go down below Snapdragon 821. If you have a budget under 300$ you should buy a phone with Snapdragon 600 series SoC.

Battery

Smartphone Battery

Battery life plays an important role while choosing a Smartphone. A Smartphone with bigger battery lasts longer, while it’s a fact but it’s not that simple. A battery life of a smartphone depends on lots of factors like – OS, SoC, Optimization, Display.

A different operating system requires a different amount of power to run. iOS can give excellent battery backup even on small capacity battery. As of Android, stock Android gives better battery backup over customized Android.

The chipset used in a phone have an impact on battery life. The different chipsets require a different amount of power. Most of the Android phones use Snapdragon chipset which is power efficient but, there are also lots of other chipset manufacturers like – MediaTek, Huawei.

The software optimization plays a vital role in battery life of a phone, better-optimized phones use phone resources more efficiently draining less juice from the battery. Also, when the phone is not in use, an optimized software hibernates the apps running in background improving phone’s standby time.

The display size and resolution also affect the battery life of a smartphone. Bigger display and resolution means phone would have to power more number of pixels draining extra power battery.

If you are Apple fanboy, you have good news as their new phones come with power efficient chips, bigger batteries, and always excellent optimized software.

Speaking of Android, it needs a massive amount of power to keep their phones alive until the end of the day.

As of today, you shouldn’t buy a phone with a battery less than 3000 mAh, as Android OS and apps are getting heavier and heavier.

We use our phones for clicking pictures, social media, and multimedia experience, that is why the display is an important thing to look at while choosing a phone.

As of today, you shouldn’t go below resolution- 1920×1080, although lots of phones come with 1440p resolution, if you have low budget then 1080p would also do just fine.

While display resolution is important but it is not all we should be looking at. A big resolution doesn’t make a display great, there are lots of other factors like – brightness, color accuracy, contrast and many others.

Usually, a phone with OLED display tends to create more accurate colors, deep blacks, and higher contrast. Samsung has always been a king in making great smartphone displays.

Their latest creation – Galaxy S8 have the best display on any smartphone to date. In every high-end smartphone, they used AMOLED display, which is very popular due to its great quality.

As we know, today’s apps are getting heavier and bigger in size, also if you are a gamer, a good game can take at least 1GB of our storage space. So, internal storage is an important thing to consider while buying a phone.

That is why Apple is no longer making 16GB iPhones. When you are buying a phone, make sure you at least go for 32 or 64GB internal storage, as we keep lots of data on our phone like photos, documents, and videos.

Some of the Android phones offer support for MicroSD card, that is a good thing as we can move our files on SD card and free up space.

Other Things

There are also lots of other things you need to look at, it might not be important as above things but you should take a look at them also.

iPhone Touch ID

This feature became popular due to Apple, fingerprint sensor uses our fingerprint to secure our phone. It makes it sure and easy unlock your phone. You can use a fingerprint to pay for lots of stuff.
